Japan Travel Guide

When to go, what not to miss, and how to travel Japan — cherry blossom and autumn maples, Kyoto's temples and Tokyo's energy, Mount Fuji, bullet trains and the quiet of the countryside.

Japan runs on a rhythm all its own — spotless, punctual and quietly beautiful. Neon Tokyo and serene Kyoto sit a two-hour bullet-train ride apart; a bowl of ramen and a centuries-old shrine share the same street. It is one of the easiest great trips to love, and one of the most rewarding to time well.

The two headline seasons — spring blossom and autumn colour — book out early. If those are the dates you want, plan months ahead; we do.

Best time to go

Late March – AprilCherry blossom (sakura). The most beautiful and most popular time — and the one to book earliest.
October – NovemberAutumn maples turn Kyoto and the mountains crimson and gold. Cool, clear and, for many, the finest season of all.
June – AugustWarm and humid, with summer festivals (matsuri) and the season for climbing Mount Fuji. Lower crowds outside the cities.
December – FebruaryCrisp and clear, with world-class snow in the north and onsen (hot springs) at their most inviting.

What not to miss

TokyoThe world's greatest city for food, energy and contrast — from Shibuya's crossing to quiet temple gardens.
KyotoA thousand shrines and temples, geisha districts and the bamboo grove of Arashiyama.
Mount Fuji & HakoneJapan's sacred peak, lake views and hot-spring inns within easy reach of Tokyo.
The bullet trainThe shinkansen — a highlight in itself, and the best way to cover the country.
Osaka & NaraOsaka's street food and Nara's temple deer, an easy pairing near Kyoto.

  • Carry some cash: Japan is modern but still card-shy in smaller shops and shrines.
  • Spring and autumn dates sell out early — book several months ahead.
  • A pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM makes navigating trains and maps effortless; we can arrange it.
