Morocco Travel Guide

When to go, what not to miss, and how to travel Morocco — the souks of Marrakech and Fes, the blue town of Chefchaouen, the Sahara by camel, and kasbahs along the road of a thousand forts.

Morocco is a feast for the senses — the call to prayer over Marrakech, the tanneries and medieval maze of Fes, mint tea in a desert camp as the dunes turn gold. In a week you can go from imperial cities to the High Atlas to the edge of the Sahara.

It is a country best travelled with a good plan and a good driver — the distances are real and the medinas are made to get lost in. That is exactly what we arrange.

Best time to go

March – MaySpring — warm days, green hills and the ideal time overall for the cities and the desert.
September – NovemberAutumn — the heat eases, the light is beautiful, and the Sahara is comfortable again.
December – FebruaryCool, quiet and atmospheric in the cities; cold nights in the desert and snow in the Atlas.
June – AugustVery hot inland and in the desert — best kept to the coast (Essaouira) if you travel then.

What not to miss

MarrakechJemaa el-Fnaa square, the souks, Majorelle Garden and the Koutoubia — the beating heart of Morocco.
FesThe world's largest living medieval medina, the tanneries and centuries-old craft.
The SaharaA night in a desert camp at Merzouga, a camel ride and a sky full of stars.
ChefchaouenThe blue-washed mountain town — one of the most photogenic places on earth.
Kasbahs & the AtlasAït Benhaddou and the Dades and Todra gorges along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs.

Practical tips

  • Hire a car with a driver-guide — Moroccan roads and medinas are far easier with a local at the wheel.
  • Dress modestly and carry a scarf; it helps in mosques, souks and the desert sun alike.
  • Haggling in the souk is expected — do it with a smile, and agree a price before you start.
  • Desert nights are cold even in summer — pack a warm layer for the camp.
