Sri Lanka Travel Guide

When to go and what not to miss in Sri Lanka — the hill-country tea trains, ancient cities and rock fortresses, leopard safaris, and beaches on two coasts.

Sri Lanka is a whole trip in a compact island: the cultural triangle of ancient cities and the rock fortress of Sigiriya; misty tea country reached by one of the world's loveliest train rides; leopard and elephant safaris; and beaches on both the south and east coasts depending on the month.

Distances are short and the welcome is warm. Here's our short brief on timing and route.

Best time to go

December – MarchBest for the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, the beaches) and the hill country and cultural triangle.
May – SeptemberThe season for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) when the south-west is wet.
Year-round interiorThe cultural triangle and hills are visitable most of the year — we time the coasts to match.

Practical tips

  • Book the Kandy-to-Ella train's reserved seats early — it's the country's most beautiful ride.
  • Match your coast to the month; we plan the whole loop around the monsoon.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples, and remove shoes and hats.
  • Tuk-tuks are everywhere — agree the fare first, or use the metered app in Colombo.
